In a few weeks I will be able to take care of wolfdog Nikhita for a couple of days. It will be the 4th time that I am allowed to take care of her.
We all heard prejudices about Huskies, the bad reputation they have. From my experience it is mostly false… I can handle them just well, by having them as companion instead of „owning“ them… I thought having Huskies for 20+ years now and consider yourself experienced dog owner would have prepared me for Nikhita… Haha…
Now its all fun, but 2 years ago when I took care of Nikhita the first time it was a really frustrating experience… She is the typical timid wolfdog and oriented from the first second on Ninja… she really likes him (well, which female doesn’t?). Even I was able to touch and caress her, because Ninja trusts me and as such Nikhita trusts me…
After a bit she panicked the first time… a tall large man approached the spot we were took a break and he looked at her… she jumped back and entangled herself in the leash… and refused to let me help her… when the person was gone she calmed down… but the same happened with people coming out of houses, a motorbike where none was before, horses, going into a do-it-yourself-store all triggered panic attacks…
While she loves Ninja and me, she still missed her family and her pack… so she constantly tried to climb out of the windows, she ran circles in the apartment… and did not think editing pictures, sitting at the pc is proper work. It was exhausting…
Since she is unable to get out of her behavior I had to adapt to her needs… longer walks, more sniffing and hunting games… but eventually we made it… I can tell you, I love that my Husky is so much easier to handle and not such a constant challenge…
When we walk with other wolfdog owners I have to chuckle… no cooperation without treats, no offleash running unless in areas where they can’t escape, stealing food and they are very demanding…
Don’t get me wrong, I love wolfdogs. I also look forward to take care of Nikhita again… She is, just like Smilla, outside her quirks, incredible charming and lovable… The 2nd and 3rd visit went much better, too.
Here are some of my favorite Nikhita pictures.
