One of the most asked questions I receive is „How do you train Ninja?!“
I thought that it would be useful to make a series of posts related to that topic ( #ninjatrainingthursday )
Rewarding your dog for desirable behavior is called „positive reinforcement“ and my preferred method to train Ninja.
Food is loved by most dogs as a reward. Other choices include playing with toys, running, chewing, jumping, digging, cuddling and praise can be worthwhile alternatives. In reward-based training, it is important to consider that not everything we would consider positive or enjoyable means a reward for the dog.
Despite that, many dogs love to cuddle, some of them still do not like to be petted outside and it would not be considered a reward then. It can be even bothersome for your dog and make it avoid the behavior you are trying to teach, because it wants to prevent being touched.
If the dog does not show the behavior more often or does not seem to enjoy your reward, just try something else. There are plenty of possibilities.
Ninja for example likes food, but he prefers praise a lot more. Often it is a better reward for him to run full speed after obeying a command or doing some tricks. He loves to spin around, to hop backwards and to grumble at me. For him this is more fun than receiving some treats.
What is your dog’s favorite reward?
