People often write personal messages to ask how I train Ninja. So here, again, I’ll sum it up.
.
I am not a dog trainer, but this is what I found useful.
.
The method we are using is called Marker Training… basically you reward good behaviour using a marker… I simply say „yes“ when Ninja does something right and always followup with a reward.
A reward must be a reward in your dog’s eyes, not yours 😁😁
Ninja loves following rewards attention > running > food > playtime
The higher value food I use the higher up food moves… if I use pure meat in pieces it is a very high reward… kibble is a very low one…
Usually I cut up dried duck meat in small pieces, about half a fingernail size… it is not the size of the reward that matters, but the amount of rewards.
.
We start training with „training“ and end it with „and over!“ when we end.
.
Basically no matter what I try to achieve… I reward every tiny bit that leads towards the behaviour I want… If e.g. I want him to come „here“ I reward – at the start – even a look at me… and then fine tune it more and more.
.
1) look at me
2) a few steps towards me
3) coming close
4) sitting in front of me
5) sitting straight in front of me
6) sitting straight in front of me and looking at my face
.
This process takes a while… but the dog will learn to offer behaviour… behaviour he thinks is what you want… but you only reward the behaviour you want the dog to do.
.
This will eventually lead to be fun for both… the result is what you see and love in the videos…
.
I believe that any task you do with your dog leads to bonding… and that was the initial goal of our training… having an obedient dog was only a side effect.
.
I believe that everyone can have a very obedient dog by training just 5 minutes each day… it is not really too much to ask for… 5 minutes before giving evening food. It is what we did…
